Puerto Vallarta has little to offer in the way of traditional museums as such, being more geared towards art museums and galleries. The tiny and yet perfectly formed Museo del Cuale is one of the most notable museums in the whole of Puerto Vallarta and located alongside the River Cuale. With a surprisingly impressive collection of ancient objects, along with various changing art exhibitions and free admission, this is one museum to search out.

Also of interest is the Manuel Lepe Museum, which is sited within the centre of Puerto Vallarta and dedicated to the life of the late Mexican artist Manuel Lepe, who was responsible for many unique pieces other than his dramatic oil paintings. The Museo del Cuale is a small museum and sited on the western side of the Isla Cuale within central Puerto Vallarta. Despite its size, this attraction boasts general information about Western Mexico's history and past. Amongst the exhibits are a number of significant archaeological treasures found within this region, traditional Mexican arts and crafts, folklore displays and some well-preserved pre-Hispanic items.

More than just a gallery, the Manuel Lepe Museum houses an array of works created by artist Manuel Lepe. Many visitors find the displays of colourful ceramics, jewellery, papier maché creations, boats and miniature sculptures of particular interest, while posters of his well-known oil canvases are also available for purchase and reasonably priced.
